Girl Stuff

I'm talking to one of the lovely young guys at work the other day and he says to me, "I might want kids someday, but I don't think I could handle having a girl."

Now, despite how much trouble I've had, I have heard that girls are easier, so I ask him why.

"I don't know anything about girl stuff" he tells me.

Um...I'm in real trouble. I don't know anything about girl stuff either. This was not really a thought that had crossed my mind. Other than wondering why every single item of clothing purchased for my daughter by her grandparents is pink, I have to admit that I haven't spent that much time thinking about the girlness of my child.

I had to ask someone at work what the girl stuff was. (Remember, I'm pregnant. My brain is not functioning properly.)

My daughter has recently been getting a bit picky about her clothes. We also have been roped into putting things into her hair that she finds laying around. I'm really bad at the hair thing, so she usually goes to daddy for this. And, admittedly, her first word (and first love) was "shoes". But, I wasn't connecting the dots.

The nurse I asked told me about "princess dresses" and how her daughter would insist on wearing them on some days. She talked about complicated hair styles, make-up, the decision about when to let her get her ears pierced, and when to let her wear high-heeled shoes. I started to cry. (Again, I'm pregnant, so no big surprise.)

I need a class. I need a tutorial. I need help. This girl stuff has me panicking. My total knowledge of how to do hair is brushing. My daughter doesn't even think I do that right. She takes the brush away from me to do it herself. Then, she brushes my hair. I'm toast.

All I can say is that my daughter needs to talk to her grandma. I'm sure grandma can do hair. Grandma probably has a princess dress somewhere for her. In fact, she insisted on wearing the shoes that grandma got her today and they are sparkly pink. We may be okay if grandma helps out a lot.

This next one is a boy. No girl stuff, right? Oh great, now I'm wondering what to do when he wants to wear the princess dress to school.
