Brain-butt connection - and birth control

Monday, March 5, 2012

Thinking about the recent flaps over birth control have me thinking about the brain-butt connection. They are intricately connected as we can see from the relationship between mood and pain drugs and constipation.

In nursing, we constantly have to administer laxatives to patients receiving pain medication. In addition, constipation and bowel problems are one of the most common side effects for people taking anti-depressants. Frankly, I just dont' understand the relationship. Why on earth would a drug to make you happy or less in pain cause constipation? I don't regularly hear people with no pain who are very happy complain that their bowels do not work. Constipation does not seem to be a side effect of happy. So, I'm not sure why medications that work on neurotransmitters have this effect. But, they do.

So, I have a recommendation for the men involved in the birth control debate. Since they seem to have forgotten that men have sex too. http://ideas.time.com/2012/03/05/men-have-sex-too/

I think they should either stop taking their meds or add some laxatives. It might help with the backup of s*%# coming out of their mouths. If Rush Limbaugh hadn't taken so much Oxycontin, maybe he wouldn't be so backed up. And wouldn't have said what he said. Maybe our congresspeople don't have a problem with women. Maybe they have a problem with drugs.
